List 3 things that a fellow student might misunderstand about the topic.

Non-Tech Assessment Techniques

To check understanding, ask kids to write 3 different summaries:

  • one in 10-15 words

  • one in 30-50 words

  • one in 75-100 words

The reason for the different lengths is it requires differnt attention to details.  Then let students compare/contrast with peers

Or  Two Roses and a Thorn:
Name two things you liked, and one thing you did not like or have a question about

Big thing about these exit slips if you do not talk about them to the class, their importance will not be real to the students, they need to know you read them...

Chose two or three photos that represent a process.  Have students write captions or a short summary explaining that process.

3 Things

Read a page of the story, have students create an illustration for that page

Have students draw what they understand instead of writing it.

Hand out index cards to the students to answer a prompt or question, take them back up then sort index cards into yes/no piles.

Choose your favourite NO response and analyze it as a class.

Extension projects give students a chance to demonstrate additional understanding of a concept in a creative way

Chalkboard Splash

Numerous students respond to a prompt/question on the chalkboard or whiteboard at the same time.

Can also do this with a sheet of paper and call it Wall of graffetti

Videos to assess

Have students create short screen-cast or videos explaining their reasoning.  You can watch what they create and are able to see exactly what they can explain or may have trouble with.

Assessment data should always includes a rich variety of learning artifacts including written assignments, student reflections, portfolios, digital images of student work, audio and video recordings.
