October is National Bullying Prevention Month

 

Here’s how to be proactive against Cyberbullying 

 

  • It can take the form of a message on email or IM or a social networking site from someone who is threatening to hurt you or beat you up.

  • It might be rumors posted on your profile or spread online for others to see.

  • It might be the deletion of you on a friend’s “buddy list” to make you feel left out.

  • It could be a profile made by someone pretending to be you.

  • Or, someone hacking into your profile and writing comments pretending they’re from you.

  • Common cyberbullying behaviors include name calling, teasing, sexual harassment, being ignored or disrespected, or being decieved by a bully who misrepresents themselves

Cyber bullying occurs in many different places online including instant messaging, social networking sites, email, and chat rooms. The most common place bullying occurs online is over instant messenger, or text messaging.

 

 

Common Forms of Cyberbullying:

  • Flaming and Trollling:  sending or posting messages to "inflame" the emotions of others, online fighting

  • Harrassment:  Repeatedly sending offensive, rude, and insulting messages

  • Physical Threats: threats to a person's physical safety

  • Happy-Slapping:  Recording someone being harassed or bullied usually this is a recording of a physical abuse that is posted online for public viewing

  • Impersonation:  stealing someone's password  or hijacking their account and then posting incriminating or humiliating pictures, video or even information

  • Rumor Spreading:  gossip through email, text messaging, or social networking

  • Outing and Trickery:  sharing someone's secrets to embarrass or trick someone to reveal something that would be embarrassing

  • Photoshopping:  changing images to place a person in a compromising or embarrassing situation

  • CyberStalking:  Repeating sending threats or highly intimidating messages that makes the victim afraid for his safety

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  • 1/3 of online teens (ages 12-17) have been cyberbullied

  • Girls are more likely to be victim of Cyberbullying than boys

  • US Center for Disease Control and Prevention now consider cyberbullying and emerging adolescent health concern

  • traditional bullying appears to peak in middle school and drop off, cyberbullying tend to slightly increase amount high school students

  • Cyberbullying can happens to kids as young as 2nd grade

  • 90% of kids 8 -12 have used the internet

  • 34% of 11 year olds have a profile on a social networking site

What to do to prevent bullying?
Signs of a Victim of Cyberbullying:
CyberBullying:

Cyberbullying is just what it sounds like----threats or other offensive behavior sent online to a victim or sent ot posted online about the victim or sent or posted online about the victim 

  • Do not respond to the rude/embarrassing email, message and comments.

  • Save the evidence, take a screen shots fo the comment or image.

  • Take note of the date and time the event occurred.

  • Contact internet provider or cell phone provider and ask them to remove any web page created to hurt the victim.

  • Share how to block or delete the contact that is being a bully.

  • Change phone number.

  • Get the authorities involved

 

  • Exhibits signs of low self-esteem including depression and fear

  • Withdraws from family and friends

  • reluctant to attend school or social events

  • Avoids the computer, cell phones, and other technological devices

  • Appears stressed when recieving an email, instant message, or text

  • Change in eating or sleeping habits

  • Do keep the lines of communication open

  • Discuss what to do if cyberbullying happen to you.
