Map Creation Tours/Trips

Map Creation Tours/Trips

Maps can be used in many ways across the curriculum.  The traditional use still apart of this, but we can take it a step further with our students today in the digital world.  We can have them create with maps in the following ways:

  • Create a tour of a time in history

  • Create Google Lit trip from a story they are reading

  • Create a tour of their city

  • Create a tour of their favorite vacation spot

  • Create a tour of the route of the Crusades

  • Create tours of historical sites

  • Create tours of outer space or the depths of the ocean

  • Create tours of the locations of galleries or landscapes of your favorite paintings

  • Create tours showing different types of geographic features

Resources:

Google Maps and Google Earth are my favorite tools for creating maps, but not every one feels that way. So here are some alternatives:
MapFab which is a fabulous, free, and simple tool for creating maps  online.
Animaps is very similar the process for creating maps in Google Maps. The main benefit of using Animaps over Google Maps is that you can create a tour of your placemarks that plays through according to the timing that you specify.
Tripline is a service designed to enable anyone to record a trip they've taken or to plan a trip itinerary. Tripline allows you to add details to each stop on your itinerary, add images, and add music to the presentation of your trip. When completed your map essentially becomes a slideshow tour.
Build A Map is a service that allows you to build layers on top of Google Maps. This is different than creating maps in the "My Places" feature of Google Maps. In My Places you can only add placemarks, paths, and shaded shapes. Using Build A Map you can add information from data sets, add shapes, and add custom labels.
