Original Image

8   DIFFERENT    Categories

Students take an original photo and then submits it for judging.  An original photo is a photo that has not be changed in any way.

When the photo is submitted it can be physical or virtual for judging.

The following are the 8 genres of photographs that will be judged:  Each genre will use the rubric above.  This category has been hard to judge in the past because the photos are so different, so the genres will help with this.

(Schools can enter 5 in every genre)

  1. Portraits:  a photo of a person especially one depicting only the face, or head and shoulders

  2. Landscapes: photo that shows spaces in the world

  3. Cityscapes: photo that shows the aspects of a city

  4. Still life: a photo of a inanimate object or small group of objects

  5. Action: a photo that shows someone or something in motion

  6. Wildlife: a photo documenting some form of wildlife in its habitat

  7. Plant life: a photo documenting a plant life in its natural habitat

Here are some tips that may help:

  • Follow the rule of thirds:  think of your lens as thirds, make your shots more interesting by off-centering

  • Scenery makes the shot look more interesting

  • Move in close

  • Watch the light....mornings and late evenings are great

  • Use the flash outdoors

  • Take many shots

  • Try new things

  • Have Fun!
